The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) has launched a scathing attack on the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, accusing it of total failure and irresponsible governance.
Addressing the media, VPP spokesperson Dr Batskhem Myrboh said the rise of the VPP itself is a direct consequence of what he described as the MDA government’s misgovernance.
“The NPP-led MDA government has been a total failure,” Dr Myrboh said, alleging that the government is “more focused on optics and advertisements than actual delivery.”
He expressed serious disappointment over the state government’s performance, pointing to rising debt levels and poor human development indicators as evidence of governance failure.
Questioning the government’s claims of development, Dr Myrboh said the administration appears to equate development solely with infrastructure projects, particularly roads built through borrowed funds.
“Good roads, according to them, are only those recently constructed using loans. But if you go to the interior parts of the state, the condition of roads is pathetic,” he said. He further added that during a recent tour of Garo Hills, the VPP president observed deplorable road conditions even in constituencies represented by NPP MLAs.
The VPP spokesperson also highlighted Meghalaya’s poor performance in reducing multidimensional poverty, accusing the government of misleading the public with exaggerated development claims.
“When we talk about development, it should ultimately reflect improvements in human development. If there is no corresponding rise in human development indicators, then the very idea of development being projected by the government becomes irrelevant,” Dr Myrboh emphasized.
