Shillong : Police have arrested around 27 to 28 people in connection with the recent violent protests reported from parts of the Garo Hills, according to Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Tynsong confirmed that the arrests were made as part of the ongoing investigation into the unrest that erupted in the region.
“Not less than 27-28 arrests have been made so far,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister stated that the investigation is still underway and that more arrests could be made as the police continue to gather evidence and identify those involved in the violence.
He said the government has given the police full freedom to carry forward the investigation to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future.
Tynsong also indicated that the scrutiny is not limited to a single district but may cover the entire Garo Hills region.
“Investigation will not necessarily be confined only to West Garo Hills. It could extend to the entire region. Let the investigation take place and we will go up to the end point of the issue,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister confirmed that authorities are also examining FIRs which reportedly name former legislator Esmatur Mominin. However, he refrained from making specific comments regarding the arrest of former MDC Sofior Rahman, stating that the investigation is still in progress.
“Let the investigation go on,” he said.
Regarding the current law-and-order situation, Tynsong said curfew restrictions will continue during the evening hours while the administration assesses the situation.
He added that the government will review how soon authorities can lift the curfew as well as the restrictions on internet services in the affected areas.
