SHILLONG : The 5th edition of the Meghalaya State League (MSL 5) kicked off with a thrilling encounter as Nongkseh SSCC edged past Khimusniang SC 2-1 in a Group A match at the SSA Stadium on Wednesday.
Goals from Sheen Sohktung in the 19th minute and a dramatic stoppage-time winner by Hardy Cliff Nongbri (90’+2) secured victory for Nongkseh, while Dawanbiangmi Passah scored the equaliser for Khimusniang in the 51st minute.
Both teams were making their debut in the prestigious statewide league organised by the Meghalaya Football Association with support from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
The tournament was formally inaugurated by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, who highlighted that the league serves as a platform for clubs across the state to showcase their talent, with the champions earning the opportunity to compete at the national level in I-League 3.
Khimusniang started the match brightly, putting early pressure on Nongkseh’s defence, with Dawanbiangmi proving dangerous on the left flank. However, Nongkseh gradually took control, and Sheen Sohktung opened the scoring with a शानदार curling strike from outside the box.
Nongkseh dominated the remainder of the first half, creating multiple chances but were denied by some solid defending and goalkeeping.
Khimusniang came back strong after the break and capitalised on a defensive lapse to equalise through Dawanbiangmi Passah.
As the match progressed, Nongkseh pushed hard for a winner while Khimusniang looked content to settle for a draw. The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when captain Hardy Cliff Nongbri found the net after sustained attacking pressure.
Despite the loss, Khimusniang delivered an impressive performance and showed promise for the rest of the tournament.
The MSL 5 action will continue with multiple matches across the state, promising more exciting football in the days ahead.
