Shillong : The National People’s Party (NPP) has decided to field its own candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha byelection, Deputy Chief Minister and state party president Prestone Tynsong confirmed on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said that the party has already taken a firm decision to contest the bypoll with its official candidate. However, he declined to specify when the candidate would be announced, stating that the details would be shared at the appropriate time.
On the possibility of an alliance with the BJP, Tynsong maintained that no final decision has been taken yet. He said the matter would depend on discussions with other political parties, adding that the NPP is open to understanding the views of its potential partners.
Despite this, he reiterated that from the party’s side, the decision to field a candidate for the Shillong parliamentary constituency remains unchanged.
The byelection has been necessitated following the sudden demise of VPP Shillong MP, late Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, on February 19.
