Shillong : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said that the government will examine the demand for setting up an inquiry into the recent unrest in the Garo Hills region.
The unrest had erupted following protests against the participation of non-tribals in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
Responding to queries, Sangma said that Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma had raised the issue and written to him, highlighting the need for an investigation into the incidents, including cases of violence and damage to public and private property.
He stated that while the need for an inquiry is being acknowledged, the government is yet to decide on the nature and structure of such an investigation.
Sangma also addressed allegations of random arrests following the unrest, stating that the law will take its course and that police actions are based on evidence and legal procedures.
He added that matters related to investigation are handled independently by the police, and senior officials such as the SP and DIG are best placed to comment on such issues.
