Shillong : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said that no final decision has been taken yet regarding the holding of elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
The elections were earlier postponed following violent protests against the participation of non-tribals in the council polls.
Sangma stated that the decision will be taken in consultation with the council leadership, emphasizing that the district council is an autonomous body and will ultimately decide the course of action.
His statement came a day after Meghalaya Governor C H Vijayashankar approved amendments to the AD Rules, making it mandatory for candidates to possess a Scheduled Tribe certificate.
The Chief Minister further informed that the state government is in close coordination with the council leaders, including the newly appointed CEM and Executive Committee, to decide the next steps.
It may be noted that the state government had earlier extended the tenure of the GHADC by six months following weeks of unrest, while the elections were initially scheduled for April 10.
