Shillong: The Senior National Khelo India ASMITA Pencak Silat League 2025-26 commenced in Shillong on Thursday, marking a major boost for martial arts in Meghalaya. The two-day national-level event is being held at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre located within the NEHU campus.
Around 300 female athletes representing 23 states and Union Territories, including Meghalaya, are participating in the league. The competition features two major categories — sparring and artistic demonstrations — showcasing both the combat and cultural dimensions of pencak silat, a traditional Indonesian martial art.
The ASMITA League is a flagship initiative of the Government of India aimed at promoting and empowering women athletes across various sporting disciplines. The event is being organised by the Sports Authority of India, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Indian Pencak Silat Federation, and the Meghalaya Pencak Silat Association.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Wailadmiki Shylla, as the chief guest, while Meghalaya State Olympic Association Working President John F Kharshiing attended as the guest of honour. The event also featured a vibrant cultural programme along with an impressive pencak silat demonstration.
Addressing the participants, Shylla congratulated the athletes for reaching the national stage, stating that their selection reflects strong performance at the state level. He also praised the ASMITA initiative for its role in strengthening women’s participation in sports.
Highlighting the state’s commitment, the minister said Meghalaya has significantly invested in sports development since 2018, including infrastructure, athlete training, and equipment. He further stated that the inclusion of pencak silat in the 39th National Games 2027, which Meghalaya will host, will be considered.
