SHILLONG : The All Meghalaya Trucks Owners and Drivers Welfare Association (AMTO&DWA) has expressed concern over what it described as the growing presence of transporters from outside Meghalaya operating in Jaintia Hills, particularly in the transportation of cement and clinker.
General Secretary of the AMTO&DWA, Bah W. Warlangpih, said the association had filed a Right to Information (RTI) application on August 24, 2026, seeking information regarding transporters operating in the district.
He said the association received the RTI response on September 23, 2026, which, according to the information obtained, showed that there are currently 53 transporters operating in Jaintia Hills.
According to the association’s interpretation of the RTI response, all 53 transporters are from outside Meghalaya.
Bah Warlangpih said the association has consequently decided to organise a protest at the premises of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
He said the date and other details of the proposed protest would be announced publicly shortly.
The association also plans to convene a public meeting to discuss the growing number of transporters operating in Jaintia Hills and its alleged impact on the livelihood of truck owners and drivers from Meghalaya.
The AMTO&DWA maintained that local truck owners and drivers are capable of undertaking transportation work, including the movement of cement and clinker, and said the issue requires discussion in the interest of local transport operators.
The association said further details regarding its proposed protest and public meeting would be made public in the coming days.
