SHILLONG, FEB 26: The United Democratic Party (UDP) will take a decision on whether to participate in the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections scheduled for April 10 and the Shillong parliamentary constituency by-election after the conclusion of the ongoing Assembly budget session.
Speaking to media persons on Thursday, UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh said the party has not yet held internal discussions on the matter as its leaders are currently occupied with the Assembly proceedings. He stated that once the session concludes, the party will convene a meeting to deliberate specifically on the Shillong MP by-election and chart its course of action.
Lyngdoh further informed that the party intends to meet next week to review its strategy for the GHADC polls and attempt to arrive at a decision before April 10. According to him, party leaders from Garo Hills are presently assessing the political situation on the ground and evaluating the most suitable approach for the 2026 GHADC elections, after which they will brief the central leadership.
The UDP’s final stance on both the district council polls and the parliamentary by-election is expected to be announced following these internal consultations.
