SHILLONG : A youth identified as Winifred Majaw from Lawsohtun, Shillong, died after drowning in Umiam Lake near Kallong Bridge on Thursday.
According to police, Majaw had gone to the lake with his friends for an outing and drowned while swimming at around 10:20 am.
After receiving information at around 12:30 pm, personnel from Mawlai Police Station and the Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and launched a search operation.
The body was later recovered by the Special Rescue Team (SRT) and handed over to the family after the completion of necessary formalities.
Police said their preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play, and the incident is being treated as an accidental drowning.
