SHILLONG : The Nangrimingin A’chik Dol (NAD) has strongly condemned alleged atrocities and intimidation linked to illegal intruders in Garo Hills and demanded immediate action, including eviction drives and a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Addressing reporters, NAD spokesperson Francis Marak called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the activities of alleged illegal Bangladeshi intruders and their role in triggering communal unrest in the region.
He also urged authorities to carry out immediate eviction of all illegal settlers occupying tribal lands, stating that such actions are in line with orders issued by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
The organisation further demanded strengthening of border security and strict enforcement of laws to prevent further infiltration, while ensuring protection of indigenous tribal rights under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
NAD cited several recent incidents, including the killing of Dilseng M Sangma and alleged serious crimes in Chibinang, as cases that require investigation by the NIA. The group also raised concerns over alleged illegal activities such as unauthorised stone quarrying in North West and South West Garo Hills and called for strict implementation of directives by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
In addition, the organisation demanded ex-gratia compensation for the family of the deceased and strict punishment for those involved in violent crimes.
Marak alleged that illegal intruders have encroached upon land and resources belonging to indigenous communities and have attempted to disturb peaceful coexistence by instigating communal tensions.
He further stated that such actions pose a serious threat to constitutional safeguards and the traditional rights of Scheduled Tribes under the Sixth Schedule.
According to NAD, the recent tensions in the region are not spontaneous but are part of deliberate attempts to destabilise the area and weaken unity among indigenous communities. The group also criticised what it described as inaction by authorities, claiming it has emboldened such elements.
The organisation also condemned the alleged arrest and harassment of NGO leaders and individuals advocating for indigenous rights, stating that those raising concerns over illegal infiltration are being unfairly targeted.
NAD has urged both the state and central governments to take decisive action to restore law and order and ensure justice, while safeguarding the rights and dignity of indigenous communities in Garo Hills.
