SHILLONG : The Meghalaya Education Department has announced that a fresh round of talks on the Meghalaya Non-Government School and College Employees Centralised Provident Fund (CPF) Scheme, 2026 will be held on May 19 or 20, following objections raised by teachers’ organisations.
Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Education Vijay Kumar Mantri said that only deficit school and college teachers, along with their associations, will be invited for the next meeting. Bank officials and members of the Board of Trustees will not be part of the discussions.
The decision comes after the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) and Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) staged a walkout from Wednesday’s meeting, objecting to the presence of bank representatives and other stakeholders.
Mantri stated that the department has acknowledged the concerns raised by the teachers’ bodies and will ensure that the next round of talks focuses solely on deficit teachers and lecturers.
He added that representatives from different regions, including Jaintia Hills and other parts of the state, will be invited to ensure wider consultation and participation.
During Wednesday’s meeting, representatives from MCTA, KJDSTA, Board of Trustees, and officials from State Bank of India (SBI) were present. SBI has been tasked with implementing the CPF Scheme for aided schools and colleges.
MCTA informed the department that it would refrain from giving detailed comments as the matter is currently sub judice before the Meghalaya High Court. Meanwhile, KJDSTA raised concerns over the lack of representation from regions like Garo Hills and stressed that discussions should be limited to teachers.
The Education Department also welcomed a proposal from the All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers’ Association to conduct awareness programmes on the provisions of the new scheme.
On the issue of retired employees, Mantri said the government has agreed to allow 100 percent withdrawal of accumulated CPF funds. SBI officials have been directed to submit detailed statements of all concerned employees by the 10th of this month.
Following verification by the respective Directorates, eligible retirees will be authorised to withdraw their full CPF amount.
Teachers opting out of the scheme must submit an undertaking to their respective authorities, including District School Education Officers for school teachers and the Directorate of Higher & Technical Education for college lecturers.
Mantri further stated that the implementation of the CPF Scheme will depend on the final verdict of the Meghalaya High Court on the matter.
