SHILLONG : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said the state government is closely examining the causes of recurring waterlogging and flooding in Jorabad, while working on both immediate relief measures and long-term solutions.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said the government is conducting a detailed assessment to identify all the factors contributing to the flooding.
“We are studying all aspects and looking at whatever measures we can put in,” the Chief Minister said.
He added that the Deputy Commissioners of the concerned districts are coordinating efforts to assess the situation and implement necessary measures.
“The Deputy Commissioners are coordinating,” he said.
Sangma pointed to the ongoing road construction in the area as one of the major factors contributing to the flooding.
“Because of the road construction, the land below the main flyover is now several feet lower. That structure is leading to water collecting there and causing faster flooding,” he explained.
The Chief Minister, however, said road construction may not be the only reason behind the problem and that the government is examining other possible causes as well.
“There could be other reasons too. As a government, we are concerned and we need to find ways to minimise the inconvenience faced by the people. This is an important issue for us,” he said.
Sangma assured that the government remains committed to identifying effective solutions to reduce flooding in Jorabad and improve public safety and convenience.
