SHILLONG : Voice of the People Party (VPP) candidate Prof Batskhem Myrboh on Thursday expressed confidence that the party will emerge victorious in the upcoming MP byelection, saying its growing support base and people-centric politics have strengthened its position across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
Speaking to reporters, Myrboh said the VPP remains focused on its own political agenda and does not see any major challenge in the election.
“We know our own politics, we know our issues and our strength. I don’t see any threat. We are confident of winning the election,” he said.
According to Myrboh, the party’s popularity continues to grow because supporters believe in its principles and commitment to clean politics rather than political inducements.
“VPP supporters back us because they understand our policies and our commitment to clean politics and the interests of the people. On that basis, we have not only retained support but increased it,” he said.
Highlighting the party’s progress since its formation in 2021, Myrboh said the VPP has made remarkable political gains within a short period.
“The party has grown tremendously. In a few years we have won elections and taken people’s issues forward. The facts speak for the credibility and strength of the party,” he added.
Responding to reports of mass resignations from the party, Myrboh dismissed the claims as exaggerated, insisting that the VPP continues to attract new members.
“Let the results of the MP byelection speak for itself,” he remarked.
Referring to the recent VPP protest march to the Main Secretariat, Myrboh said the large turnout reflected genuine public support rather than financial incentives.
“We never provide financial support. Whoever is free comes. We are grateful and satisfied with the numbers,” he said.
On criticism that the party raises issues through public protests instead of only in the Assembly, Myrboh echoed VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit’s view that democracy extends beyond legislative institutions.
“Politics and democracy is a continuous process. Legitimacy is also a continuous bargaining process. Politics and democracy exist and operate beyond the institutions,” he stated.
Myrboh said the VPP will now concentrate on campaigning for the MP byelection while continuing to raise public concerns before the government.
“These are significant issues for the people of the state. The government has to respond. We are the channel to express those issues,” he said.
