SHILLONG : Hawkers from Laitumkhrah continued their protest for the third consecutive day on Thursday, gathering outside the Municipal Office despite heavy rain to oppose what they described as a unilateral decision by the authorities regarding their relocation.
The protesting hawkers claimed they had earlier participated in discussions with the authorities and visited several proposed relocation sites. They said they had expressed their willingness to shift to suitable locations, including the newly constructed Laitumkhrah Market, the Fire Brigade Road stretch, the Health Complex and other identified areas.
However, the vendors alleged that the municipal authorities later changed the relocation plan without consulting them, leaving them dissatisfied with the process.
According to the protesters, any decision affecting their livelihood should be taken only after proper consultation with the hawkers concerned.
They urged the administration to honour the earlier proposals discussed with them and to finalize the relocation sites through mutual consultation instead of imposing a decision unilaterally.
The hawkers maintained that they are not opposed to relocation but want a fair and transparent process that protects their livelihoods while ensuring an acceptable solution for all stakeholders.
