SHILLONG : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday said that Meghalaya and Assam have worked out “some measures” to defuse the ongoing tension at Lapangap along the inter-state border following a high-level meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati.
Conrad Sangma, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, met Himanta Biswa Sarma at his office chamber in Guwahati to discuss the sensitive situation developing along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
Senior officials from both Meghalaya and Assam governments, including district authorities, also attended the meeting.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Conrad said the main purpose of the visit was to address the growing concern surrounding the situation at Lapangap.
“The main purpose of our visit was to discuss the ongoing situation in Lapangap that is happening right now along the Assam-Meghalaya border,” Sangma said.
He stated that both governments have been trying for several days and weeks to bring all stakeholders together in an effort to resolve the issue peacefully.
Describing the discussion as “very positive” and “constructive,” the Meghalaya Chief Minister said both sides have agreed on certain measures that could help reduce tensions in the area.
“We have worked out some measures which could help us defuse the situation and our officials concerned will be taking steps in the next few days to try and resolve the issue,” he said.
Conrad also appealed to officials, local stakeholders and people from both states to cooperate and maintain peace.
“We should work in a positive manner and trust each other so that we can find not only a short-term solution but also a long-term resolution,” he added.
The Chief Minister further informed that discussions on the larger Assam-Meghalaya border issue will resume after the new Assam cabinet is fully constituted.
He said Friday’s meeting was specifically focused on the Lapangap issue and expressed hope that the situation would soon be resolved through cooperation from all stakeholders involved.
