SHILLONG : West Garo Hills Police have arrested six persons for their alleged involvement in a large-scale inter-state fraud racket that used forged GHADC work orders and fake licences to cheat suppliers across different parts of India.
The arrests were made following an FIR lodged by the Secretary of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on May 7, along with information received from victims of the alleged fraud.
According to police, on the night of June 11, investigators received intelligence that members of the racket were operating from Guwahati and were attempting to cheat a businessman from Gujarat through a fake supply contract linked to forged government documents.
Acting swiftly, a team led by the Additional Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, travelled to Guwahati and arrested five suspects from Greenwood Hotel on June 12. A sixth accused, identified as Reeturaj Kaundinya of Tezpur, was later apprehended from Assam’s Sonitpur district.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Narendra Singh (46) of Kamrup district, Dip Hazarika (53) of Guwahati, Kokkal Dutta (58) of Bongaigaon, Taposh Mukherjee (45) of Faridabad in Haryana, Mridupaban Gogoi (40) of Golaghat, and Reeturaj Kaundinya (50) of Tezpur.
During the operation, police seized suspected fake GHADC work orders, forged terms and condition documents, a counterfeit non-tribal trading licence issued in the name of Om Sai Sarees of Surat, and cash amounting to Rs 50,000.
Investigators revealed that the accused had already collected Rs 3 lakh from the victim and were attempting to secure a four percent commission on a bogus work order valued at Rs 46 crore when police intervened.
Police believe the case points to a well-organised network involved in creating and using forged government documents to carry out financial fraud across states.
A case has been registered at Tura Police Station, and further investigations are underway to identify additional suspects and victims linked to the racket.
West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma has urged traders, suppliers and contractors to verify all work orders, licences and government documents directly with the issuing authorities before making any payments. He also appealed to the public to immediately report any suspicious transactions or business offers to the police.
