SHILLONG : Senior BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA AL Hek has expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will lead the next government in Meghalaya after the 2028 Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Hek said the BJP is preparing to contest the elections independently and will not enter into any pre-poll alliance with other political parties.
“Believe me, in 2028 it will be a BJP-led government in Meghalaya. That is very clear. The national leadership will decide who the leader will be, but I am telling you again that in 2028 it will be a BJP-led government in Meghalaya,” Hek said.
He also ruled out the possibility of any electoral understanding before the polls.
“We will go alone. There will be no pre-poll alliance with any political party,” he asserted.
Responding to questions on whether the BJP’s Meghalaya unit could see a leadership change before the 2028 elections, including a new state president, Hek said the matter is entirely in the hands of the party’s national leadership.
“That will depend on the national leadership’s decision. I will not be able to comment on any decision taken at the national level,” he added.
The BJP is currently a partner in Meghalaya’s coalition government led by the National People’s Party (NPP), but Hek’s remarks indicate the party’s intention to independently seek a mandate to form the next government in the state.
