SHILLONG : Tension erupted along Jail Road in Shillong on Saturday morning after personnel of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB), accompanied by magistrates and police personnel, attempted to prevent street vendors from operating their stalls in the area.
The SMB officials reportedly cordoned off several shops and street-vending stalls that had opened for business, preventing customers from accessing the vendors and purchasing goods.
The enforcement drive led to a heated exchange between the street vendors and the police, as well as SMB officials, with the vendors strongly opposing the action.
The vendors refused to leave the area and maintained that they would continue their business from the location. They also warned that they would remove their goods and belongings themselves rather than vacate the area under the circumstances.
Hawkers question order behind SMB action
Speaking to the media, the vendors said SMB officials informed them that the action was being carried out based on orders received from higher authorities.
However, the vendors claimed that when they asked the officials to produce or show the order, they were unable to do so.
The vendors subsequently maintained that they would not vacate the area until a proper alternative location was identified and arrangements were made for their relocation.
They said they were not opposed to discussions or relocation but questioned the manner in which the enforcement action was being carried out.

The situation remained tense as the vendors stood their ground and resisted attempts to prevent them from conducting business.
The incident has once again brought into focus the ongoing issue of street vendors and their relocation in Shillong, particularly the concerns of hawkers over being removed without what they consider adequate alternative arrangements.
The vendors maintained that they would continue to remain at the location until a suitable place was provided for them.
