UMTHLI : The Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP), Rimuliang Circle, on September 23 visited Umthli village under Nongmynsaw Syiemship in the Langpih Sector to extend its support to a public meeting organised by local village leaders.
The meeting was held to express strong opposition to a claim made by a news channel from Assam that 95% of residents in the area wanted to join Assam if the Meghalaya-Assam boundary issue is settled.
Hundreds of residents from the area attended the public meeting, with participants rejecting the claim and stating that they do not wish to move to Assam.
The FKJGP Rimuliang Circle said the gathering demonstrated the position expressed by local residents regarding their preference to remain in Meghalaya.
The organisation also appealed to the people of the area not to accept any attempt to portray them as wanting to be governed by Assam.
According to the FKJGP, the residents of the area include members of the Khasi and Garo communities and have the right to remain in Meghalaya.
The organisation urged both the Meghalaya and Assam governments to listen to the views expressed by residents living in the area while addressing the inter-state boundary issue.
The FKJGP further said the people of the area had made their position clear through the public meeting and maintained that they did not want to come under Assam’s administration.
The organisation reiterated its support for the residents and their position concerning the Meghalaya-Assam boundary issue.
