RI-BHOI: A five-year-old boy died after being swept away by a sudden surge of floodwater while playing near a stream at Nonkchigittim village under the Killing area of Ri-Bhoi district on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Mewanshwa Mawblei.
According to information gathered, the incident occurred in the morning when heavy rainfall caused the water level in the stream to rise suddenly. The strong current reportedly swept the child downstream.
After receiving information about the incident, local residents, along with the police, launched a search operation to locate the missing child.
Following the search, the boy was found at around 11 AM. He was immediately taken to PA Sangma International Medical College for emergency medical attention. However, doctors declared that he had died before reaching the hospital.
In connection with the death, the family reportedly requested that a post-mortem examination not be conducted, as there was no suspicion of foul play.
After completing the necessary formalities as required under law, police handed over the child’s body to his family for the final rites.
