SHILLONG : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a fresh organisational drive in Meghalaya following the induction of eight former United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs, with the party focusing on strengthening its organisational base and expanding its reach across the state.
The party’s newly appointed Meghalaya in-charge, Kanad Purkayastha, arrived in Shillong on Friday for his maiden visit after assuming the responsibility. During his visit, he held a closed-door meeting with the eight newly inducted legislators to discuss the party’s future strategy and organisational expansion.
Purkayastha said strengthening the BJP’s organisation in Meghalaya would be the party’s immediate priority, adding that he and the co-in-charge had been entrusted with the responsibility of expanding its presence in the state.
“This is our first visit as in-charge and co-in-charge. We met our newly joined MLAs, and the main discussion was on how to expand and strengthen the organisation in Meghalaya. We have been given this responsibility,” he said.
He added that the BJP intended to reach every household in Meghalaya and inform people about the development initiatives undertaken by the Central Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We want to reach every person in Meghalaya and apprise them of the developmental work done under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When every state is getting that scope for growth, Meghalaya should also get it,” Purkayastha said.
However, the BJP leader declined to comment on other political matters, maintaining that the party was currently concentrating on organisational issues. He said the party would examine other political developments after a few days.
Asked about the traffic congestion that delayed his arrival in Shillong, Purkayastha said traffic jams were common in the city, particularly on Friday afternoons.
“The place I come from also has traffic problems. Friday afternoon jam is a usual phenomenon in Shillong; this is not the first time. Under the dynamic leadership of Narendra Modi, such problems can be solved in future,” he said.
The BJP’s latest organisational initiative comes after eight former UDP MLAs joined the party, marking a significant development in Meghalaya’s political landscape as it seeks to expand its presence across the state.
