SHILLONG, OCTOBER 9: Meghalaya’s lone Rajya Sabha MP, James Pangsang Kongkal Sangma, has urged the Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill, 2026, to visit Shillong and hold consultations with stakeholders from the region.
Sangma, who is a Special Invitee to the committee chaired by Lok Sabha MP Dr Sanjay Jaiswal, said holding consultations in Shillong would make it more convenient for stakeholders to present their views before the parliamentary panel.
“I have personally written to the chairman that it would be convenient if the committee comes to Shillong and meets stakeholders here,” Sangma said on Friday.
On the committee’s progress, Sangma said deliberations were underway, with the panel holding meetings and engaging with stakeholders and various government departments.
He said he could not disclose the details of the committee’s discussions but confirmed that the panel was working towards completing its task within the stipulated timeframe.
“We had meetings recently and I am not at liberty to divulge details, but the committee is meeting stakeholders and many departments. The mandate is to complete everything and submit the report before the end of the winter session,” he said.
Expressing confidence in the committee’s progress, Sangma said he understood the urgency of the matter and was confident that the panel, under the leadership of Dr Sanjay Jaiswal, would complete its work on time.
“We understand the urgency and under the chairmanship of Dr Sanjay Jaiswal, I am sure we will complete our task,” he added.
Sangma’s request seeks to bring the committee’s consultations to Shillong, potentially making it easier for stakeholders from Meghalaya and the wider Northeast to place their views before the panel as it examines the proposed amendments to the FCRA.
