SHILLONG : Meghalaya’s Rajya Sabha MP, James Pangsang Kongkal Sangma, has assured a delegation of anganwadi cooks and helpers that he will take up their demand for a revision of wages with the Government of India.
The delegation met Sangma on Friday and highlighted the financial difficulties they face due to the meagre remuneration they receive for their work at anganwadi centres.
Speaking about the meeting, Sangma said the workers had expressed concern that their current remuneration was insufficient to meet their needs and called for a revision of their wages.
“There was a delegation that met me consisting of cooks and helpers of anganwadi centres and they have brought their concerns to me regarding the remuneration of wages that are being paid and how it is not enough for them and that there should be a revision in that,” Sangma said.
He assured the delegation that he would extend his support and bring their concerns to the attention of the Centre.
“I have given them my assurance that as Member of Parliament from Meghalaya, I will be taking their concerns up to the Government of India so that their concerns are addressed and the Government of India can be made aware of the difficulties and the challenges that they are facing in today’s world,” he said.
Sangma further said he would urge the Centre to consider the workers’ demands and work towards resolving the issue.
“I will also impress upon and request the Government of India to heed their demands so that there can be some kind of resolution to this problem,” he added.
The proposed intervention comes as anganwadi cooks and helpers seek better remuneration in view of the financial challenges they say they face, with the delegation hoping that their appeal will lead to a revision of their wages
