In a joint effort to combat the rising issues of drug addiction and substance abuse, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) in collaboration with the RiBhoi Area Welfare Association (RAWA) and the Umsning Police Department organized a one-day awareness program today at Balawan College. The event, titled “Drug Abuse and Education on Substance Abuse,” was aimed at educating students and young adults about the dangers of drug abuse and empowering them to make informed choices.

The program featured several distinguished speakers from various fields, each addressing different facets of the topic. Shri Elias R. Marak, Officer-in-Charge of Umsning Police Station, opened the session with an informative talk on the types of drugs, the nature of drug abuse, its effects on individuals and society, and the rising concern of teenage addiction. He emphasized the immediate and long-term health consequences of drug use, urging the youth to stay vigilant against addiction.

Shri Samborlin Warjri highlighted the legal repercussions of drug-related offenses, explaining the stringent punishments for both selling and consuming drugs under the NDPS Act. His address underscored the importance of law enforcement in curbing the drug menace and served as a deterrent to those involved or considering involvement in drug-related activities.

Shri Kitdorius Dkhar delivered a session on life skills and the power of choice, encouraging students to make decisions that align with a positive, substance-free lifestyle. He stressed that developing resilience and the ability to make conscious, healthy choices can help prevent addiction and its associated challenges.

Smt. Balakyntiew Umbah, President of RAWA, concluded the program with a powerful talk on the role of individuals as changemakers in their communities. She urged participants to actively contribute to spreading awareness and supporting friends or family members in need, emphasizing that collective action is key to making a difference.

The awareness program witnessed significant participation from the students and faculty of Balawan College, fostering a productive dialogue around drug abuse prevention. The event marked a collaborative milestone between NYKS, RAWA, and local law enforcement in their shared mission to combat substance abuse and build a healthier, more informed community.
