Security forces on Thursday arrested two over ground workers (OWGs) of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) for their involvement in the December 15 IED blast at the Dhar Company in Shymplong, East Jaintia Hills district.
The blast caused damage to a water tanker vehicle at the site. However, police clarified that no casualties were reported, contradicting the claims made by the militant outfit.
“Two persons have been arrested. They are over ground workers of the HNLC and have admitted to their involvement in the crime,” a senior police officer confirmed.
When contacted, the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills, said the investigation is ongoing and indicated the presence of a larger conspiracy behind the incident.
“Investigation is ongoing, and several teams are working to crack the case. More arrests are likely,” the SP stated.
The proscribed HNLC had earlier claimed responsibility for the blast, alleging that it targeted property belonging to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar after he refused to pay extortion demands.
HNLC General Secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw also issued a statement expressing condolences for an alleged death during the blast, claiming it was unintentional.
However, police categorically rejected the claim, stating that no death occurred in the incident.
“The claim of the IED blast is correct, but the claim of any death is completely wrong,” the SP said.
