Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday asserted that the Meghalaya government will not tolerate terrorism or illegal activities of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) following the recent IED attack on the Dhar Company at Shymplong in East Jaintia Hills district.
The outfit has claimed responsibility for the explosion, stating that the attack targeted property belonging to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar after he allegedly refused to comply with extortion demands.
Responding to queries on the incident and reports of extortion demand notes being served on politicians, Sangma said the claims made by the outfit were contradictory.
“Details I don’t have with me, but earlier they were saying he was paying and now they are saying he is not paying. That itself is quite contradictory,” the Chief Minister said.
Sangma assured that strong action is underway, adding that the police have gathered sufficient evidence against those involved.
“The police have made a very strong case. They have enough information and full evidence. I am sure the Superintendent of Police will be sharing further details tomorrow. Action has been taken very swiftly and those behind this will definitely be picked up,” he stated.
In its statement, the HNLC, through its general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw, claimed that the attack was carried out after Deputy Chief Minister Dhar allegedly refused to meet extortion demands.
Meanwhile, police confirmed that two over-ground workers (OWGs) of the HNLC were arrested on December 18 in connection with the blast. The accused have reportedly confessed to planting the improvised explosive device.
The government has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against militancy and assured that law enforcement agencies will continue to act decisively to maintain peace and security in the state.
