The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) celebrated its 44th anniversary at a grand function held at the Khasi National Dorbar Hall, Mawkhar, on December 23. The programme witnessed the felicitation of black belt karatekas, national and regional medallists, coaches and officials who have brought laurels to the association and the state over the past year.
The event was attended by karatekas, coaches, officials and members of AMKA, reflecting the strong unity and legacy built by the association over more than four decades.
As part of the celebration, certificates were awarded to 22 karatekas who successfully completed their 1st Dan and 2nd Dan black belt grading, marking a significant milestone in their karate journey and recognising their dedication, discipline and perseverance.
The programme also included the felicitation of karatekas who excelled at national and regional championships, along with coaches and officials who were honoured for their tireless contribution towards the growth and development of karate in Meghalaya.
The function began with a welcome address by AMKA President Hunlang Lytan, who highlighted the association’s 44-year journey and its continuous role in promoting karate across the state. He emphasised the values of discipline, dedication and unity that have been the foundation of AMKA since its inception.
This was followed by a detailed report on the history, growth and legacy of AMKA presented by General Secretary Ksan Kupar Warjri. He recalled the vision and farsighted leadership of the association’s founder, late Sensei Stephan Leong, who pioneered karate in Meghalaya.
Warjri stated that the achievements of AMKA today are a direct result of the founder’s strict discipline, guidance and emphasis on mutual respect among karatekas. He urged the present generation to uphold the teachings and values laid down by Sensei Leong, which he said would continue to guide them towards success.
He also recalled that under the founder’s mentorship, several renowned international karatekas emerged from Meghalaya, including Banshanlang Kharumnuid, Donboklang Lyngdoh, Damang Syngkon, Linza Syiem, among others, who brought national and international recognition to the state.
Adding colour to the celebration, karatekas showcased their talents through cultural performances, including singing and dancing, which were warmly appreciated by the audience.
