The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emphasized the critical importance of completing fencing along the India–Bangladesh international border, particularly in Meghalaya, to ensure security and stability in the region.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, BJP state general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna said that fencing along the international border with Bangladesh is extremely important and must be completed at the earliest.
“Fencing along the international border with Bangladesh is very important. We are very concerned about our borders with Bangladesh and we hope for speedy completion of the border fencing. People should understand that fencing is necessary,” Pohshna said.
He pointed out that the issue of border fencing began receiving serious attention only after the BJP assumed power at the Centre.
“It is only after the BJP took over the government at the Centre that border fencing has been taken up on a serious note,” he added.
Highlighting improvements in border-area infrastructure, Pohshna said development activities have significantly increased in recent years.
“If you look at the infrastructure development in border areas, it has been strengthened after the BJP government took over. Work is going on, and we expect that border fencing will be completed with the passage of time,” he said.
The BJP leader also condemned recent threats circulating on social media from Bangladesh, calling them unacceptable and assuring that the party remains vigilant.
“We have seen threats on social media and we cannot accept that because of threats by people opposing the system in Bangladesh, we should not take part. Yes, we are vigilant,” Pohshna stated.
Referring to claims about threats to the ‘seven sisters’, Pohshna dismissed such statements, asserting that the North-East is an integral and secure part of India.
“The threat to the seven sisters is something that makes us want to laugh. We are in a country that provides firm security, and the North-East is an integral part of India. No one can change that,” he said.
Pohshna further highlighted the unstable situation in Bangladesh, noting the absence of a stable government.
“The situation in Bangladesh is very volatile as there is no government. I am sure the Central government is taking note of all these developments,” he added.
