SHILLONG, JAN 9:
United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui has expressed concern over the prevailing situation in Bangladesh, particularly in view of the upcoming February elections, stressing the need for peace to ensure stability along the international border.
“We want peace to prevail in Bangladesh, and we hope the incoming government will ensure tranquility along the international border, allowing trade and commerce to resume smoothly,” Rymbui said.
Highlighting the close impact of developments in Bangladesh on Meghalaya, Rymbui pointed out concerns regarding the safety and welfare of Meghalaya students pursuing medical studies in the neighbouring country.
“Any problem in Bangladesh directly affects us, especially our youths who are studying medicine there. We hope peace and tranquility prevail to ensure their safety,” he added.
Referring to the historical and cultural links between Sylhet in Bangladesh and parts of Meghalaya, Rymbui stressed the importance of safeguarding minority communities.
“We thank God for the peace prevailing in Khasi-Pnar dominated areas and urge the incoming government of Bangladesh to protect minority interests,” he said.
The UDP legislator also called upon border residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to prevent illegal infiltration.
“I urge residents to immediately inform the BSF and police about any suspicious activities and request paramilitary forces to remain extra vigilant,” Rymbui stated.
While acknowledging that economic hardship often drives illegal infiltration, Rymbui commended local residents for their alertness in preventing such incidents.
“Working together is key to preventing illegal infiltration into our state and country,” he emphasized.
