Shillong : The Shillong-Dawki Road is set to reopen for traffic by August 10, with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) directed to complete the remaining subway construction within the deadline, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong said on Thursday.
Speaking after a high-level review meeting on ongoing road infrastructure projects, Tynsong said discussions focused on the progress of several key projects across Meghalaya, including works in Garo Hills and the proposed High-Speed Corridor.
“We had a detailed discussion on the progress of work, not only on Shillong-Dawki but also on the different projects in the state of Meghalaya, in Garo Hills, and even the High-Speed Corridor,” he said.
Tynsong emphasized that restoring traffic on the Shillong-Dawki route is a top priority because of its crucial role in supporting trade, tourism, and daily commuting between Shillong and the international border at Dawki.
“As far as Shillong-Dawki is concerned, we have taken the decision that NHIDCL has to complete the subway construction by 10th August. By 10th August, we have to, by any means, reopen traffic movement from that portion where the road was disconnected,” he stated.
The Deputy Chief Minister also said the meeting addressed delays and bottlenecks affecting other NHIDCL projects in the state.
“About other issues also, we discussed and resolved them, including the Garo Hills projects which are being undertaken by NHIDCL,” he added.
The reopening of the damaged Shillong-Dawki stretch is expected to provide major relief to commuters, transporters, and businesses that have been affected by disruptions on one of Meghalaya’s most important highways connecting the state capital with Dawki.
