Shillong : The Meghalaya government has expressed its willingness to engage in consultations with stakeholders to address concerns surrounding the proposed Shillong Ropeway project.
Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira said the government is prepared to hold discussions if required to clear public doubts regarding the project, particularly concerns over its environmental impact and alleged tree felling.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Shira clarified that the ropeway project was initiated during the tenure of the previous Tourism Minister and not under his leadership.
He said all statutory procedures had already been completed before the project commenced.
“I have been informed that everything has been done properly and all the required permissions have been obtained from the concerned authorities,” the Minister said.
Responding to demands for greater public consultation, Shira acknowledged that communication is important to address fears related to water scarcity and environmental issues.
“Consultation will take place if there is anything. It is necessary to remove apprehensions and bridge the information gap. A bridge should be built with those who believe the government has not acted properly,” he said.
The Minister further stated that the Tourism Department had obtained all mandatory approvals, including forest clearance and the required environmental clearance, before work on the project began.
According to Shira, departmental officials completed all necessary formalities in compliance with the law.
“Forest clearance has been obtained, and an environmental certificate has also been issued. I do not know what more is left,” he added.
The Shillong Ropeway project has recently drawn criticism from several groups and residents, who have raised concerns over its possible environmental impact, including the felling of trees and fears of affecting local water sources. The government, however, maintains that all legal and environmental requirements have been fulfilled and has reiterated its readiness to engage with the public to address any remaining concerns.
