Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday expressed uncertainty over the Meghalaya Transport Corporation’s (MTC) decision to discontinue school bus services from April 1, 2026, stating that the government is yet to ascertain the reasons behind the move.
“We have not checked as to why the MTC has stopped. So, until and unless I know the reason, it is very difficult for me to comment on that,” Rymbui said while responding to concerns raised by parents.
The decision has triggered anxiety among parents, who fear that alternative transport arrangements, including STEM buses and private services, may not be affordable or reliable for students.
However, the education minister highlighted the state government’s efforts to support students and ease traffic congestion, citing the introduction of STEM buses launched two years ago by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
“I am very grateful to the chief minister as two years back he launched these STEM buses which are quite helpful,” Rymbui said, expressing optimism that the initiative would be expanded.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to public welfare, Rymbui stated, “It is the duty of the government. The government is for the public.”
He further assured that if STEM buses are found to be effective, the government will increase their numbers in the months and years ahead.
