The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) has strongly urged the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to immediately release the pending salaries of 288 contractual staff nurses for the months of November and December.
In a statement issued on Monday, VPP spokesperson B Myrboh said the delay in salary disbursement has caused severe financial distress to the nurses and their families.
“The party therefore demands that the government disburse the salaries of these contractual nurses immediately,” Myrboh stated.
Highlighting the hardships faced by the nurses, he said that many were forced to celebrate Christmas and New Year without pay, while also struggling to meet essential household expenses, including their children’s education.
“The government should not forget that these nurses have to feed themselves and their families. It is highly disappointing and condemnable that staff who dedicate their lives to serving fellow citizens are left high and dry by the government,” he added.
The VPP further emphasized that timely payment of salaries should be a top priority, calling it a fundamental responsibility of governance.
“It is in this context that the VPP has consistently advised the state government to avoid wasteful expenditure and instead focus on the basic obligations of governance,” Myrboh said.
