SHILLONG : Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said that the process of forming the proposed One North East Front is underway, with consultations currently being held with leaders from various political parties across the North East region.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said discussions with regional leaders have generated a positive response.
“We have been consulting and talking to many of our leaders. A lot of people have seen that there is a very positive aspect to it,” the Chief Minister said.
Acknowledging the ambitious nature of the initiative, Sangma said that bringing together diverse political interests from the region would not be an easy task.
“It is something that is very desirable. Many political parties have tried to move forward in that direction, but it has not been easy,” he added.
When asked about a timeline for the formation of the One North East Front, Sangma clarified that the initiative is not a fixed project with a defined deadline but a gradual process.
“It is not like laying a foundation for a particular project. It is a process of different political minds coming together. It takes time and it is not that simple,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Sangma assured that the intent behind the initiative is clear and that efforts are ongoing to take the process forward.
The NPP chief, however, declined to share further details, stating that an official announcement is yet to be made.
“A lot of discussion has taken place, but it would not be appropriate for me to share details at this stage as it has not been announced yet,” he added.
