JORABAT : The protest by taxi drivers from Assam intensified at Jorabat on Friday, with the Assam State Taxi Drivers’ Union, along with Bir Lachit Sena, taking to the streets again to oppose the movement of vehicles from Meghalaya into Assam.
The protesting groups have blocked vehicles travelling from Meghalaya towards Assam as well as those attempting to enter Meghalaya from Assam. Even goods-carrying vehicles heading towards Meghalaya have reportedly been stopped amid the ongoing agitation.
The protesters have been sitting directly on the road and using barricades to prevent the movement of vehicles and commuters through the area.
The situation has caused disruption to normal traffic movement along the Jorabat stretch, with vehicles being prevented from proceeding towards either Meghalaya or Assam.
The latest protest comes amid growing tensions between transport groups from the two neighbouring states over the movement and operation of commercial vehicles.
