RI BHOI : Former MLA from Garo Hills, Esmatur Mominin, who was allegedly linked to the recent clashes in the region following his statements, surrendered before the Ri Bhoi police on Tuesday.
According to sources, Mominin had been on the run after the incident but has now voluntarily presented himself before the police authorities. The investigation into the matter is currently underway.
However, officials from the Ri Bhoi police have not issued any official statement regarding the development so far.
It may be recalled that the unrest in Garo Hills erupted following protests by sections of the Garo community opposing the participation of non-tribals in the election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
The protests escalated into violent clashes in the region, raising concerns over law and order and the sensitive issue of indigenous rights in the state.
Further details are awaited as the police continue their investigation.
