SHILLONG : Meghalaya Police have reconstructed the crime scene in the Nongrah murder case after the accused, Kennedy Khongsit, admitted to killing 39-year-old Eilang Phawa. He is currently in eight days’ police custody following a court order, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said on Wednesday.
According to police, the reconstruction was carried out based on Khongsit’s admission, with independent witnesses present at the scene. During the exercise, the accused led the police team to the exact location where the crime took place and demonstrated how the act was committed.
The SP stated that Khongsit allegedly took the victim behind a house to a public toilet area, assaulted her by hitting her against a concrete structure, and later disposed of the body in a sack.
Police have made significant progress in the investigation, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) handling the case and working to expedite the filing of the charge sheet.
Khongsit was also recently arrested in connection with the murder of a 7-year-old boy, adding to the seriousness of the case.
During initial interrogation, the accused reportedly told police that the crime was committed in a fit of rage. He claimed he became irritated during an interaction with the victim, allegedly triggered by remarks he found offensive.
Authorities confirmed that a psychological evaluation of the accused has been conducted, and he has been found to be mentally stable.
Meanwhile, police said further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the background and other possible links related to the accused.
