Shillong : East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Monday said that initial investigations indicate suicide in the deaths of two Hajong youths whose bodies were found inside a shed at Lumsohphoh along the Shillong-Jowai Road. However, he stressed that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after the post-mortem examination report is received.
Addressing reporters, Syiem said police received information at around 7 am on Sunday regarding the discovery of two bodies inside a shed at Lumsohphoh. According to preliminary findings, both bodies were found with ropes tied around their necks.
Following the information, officers and personnel from Laitumkhrah Police Station immediately rushed to the spot and secured the area. Senior district police officials and forensic experts also reached the location to conduct a detailed examination.
The Superintendent of Police said no external injuries were found on either of the bodies during the preliminary examination. He stated that the forensic team carefully examined all possible angles, including whether the deaths were due to suicide or any other cause.
According to the inquest conducted by the police, all available indications point towards suicide. However, officials are awaiting the post-mortem report before drawing any final conclusions.
An Unnatural Death case has been registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station, and further investigation will continue based on the findings of the post-mortem report. Police expect the report to be available within a week.
Syiem described the case as appearing to be a suicide based on the evidence collected so far, noting that there were no signs of physical assault or injury on the bodies.
Speaking about the background of the deceased, the SP revealed that the young man and woman were in a relationship and both worked in the same locality. He said investigators are trying to determine what may have driven the couple to take such an extreme step.
Police have so far found no indication that family opposition played a role in the incident. According to the investigation, both belonged to the same community and district, and there was reportedly no objection from their families regarding their relationship.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities awaiting the post-mortem report to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths.
