SHILLONG : The Meghalaya government has completed the Rs 90 crore one-time Special Industrial Closure Package for employees of Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL) ahead of schedule, with the final instalment released last week.
Sohra MLA Gavin M. Mylliem said all dues under the package have now been cleared, and MCCL has begun releasing the final payments to its former employees.
The Rs 90 crore package, announced in January 2025, was originally scheduled to be paid in three instalments over three financial years. However, the state government completed the entire payout within just two financial years.
According to Mylliem, the first instalment of Rs 36 crore (40%) was released in March 2025, followed by the second instalment of Rs 27 crore (30%) in July 2025. The third and final instalment of Rs 27 crore was released last week, completing the full compensation package.
Mylliem said the early release of the remaining amount fulfilled the government’s commitment to the employees, who had requested that the payments be expedited.
He thanked the MDA government, led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, for honouring its promise and ensuring that the compensation reached employees sooner than originally planned.
The Sohra MLA also confirmed that all long-pending dues to MCCL suppliers, including coal and clay suppliers, have been cleared during the current financial year.
He said the settlement of both employee compensation and supplier dues would provide financial security to affected families and help former MCCL employees build a stable livelihood after the closure of the state-owned cement company.
The completion of the Rs 90 crore package marks the end of a long-pending compensation process and brings relief to hundreds of former MCCL employees and suppliers.
