Shillong : Meghalaya is fully prepared to conduct the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as per the schedule announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI), Chief Electoral Officer Dr BDR Tiwari said on Friday after holding a meeting with political parties.
Dr Tiwari informed that Meghalaya has been included in the third phase of the Special Intensive Revision along with Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Delhi.
He said the qualifying date for the revision exercise has been fixed as October 1, 2026.
According to the ECI schedule, training and printing preparations will be conducted from June 20 to June 29, while Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will carry out house-to-house verification from June 30 to July 29.
He also stated that the rationalisation of polling stations is scheduled to be completed by July 29 and the draft electoral rolls will be published on August 5.
The period for filing claims and objections will continue from August 5 to September 4, while the disposal of claims and objections will continue till October 3. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on October 7.
Dr Tiwari said Meghalaya has already begun the preparatory exercises as directed by the Election Commission and is fully ready to conduct the SIR process smoothly.
He informed that the first round of consultations with political parties has already been completed and all concerns and queries raised during the meeting were addressed.
The Chief Electoral Officer also urged political parties to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to assist in maintaining transparency during the revision process.
He said BLAs are important stakeholders at the grassroots level and would work closely with BLOs at polling stations to ensure a transparent and error-free electoral roll.
“We are fully committed to keep this entire SIR exercise transparent, free, fair and make our electoral roll healthy and error free,” Dr Tiwari stated.
Explaining the documentation process, Dr Tiwari said electors whose names already appear in the 2005 voters’ list would only need to submit the relevant portion of that electoral roll along with the enumeration form.
He said voters born before July 1, 1987, whose names are not in the 2005 electoral roll, would need to submit self-documents approved by the ECI along with the enumeration form.
For electors born between July 1, 1987 and December 2, 2004, whose parents’ names are not registered in the electoral roll, documents of either parent along with self-documents would be required.
Meanwhile, electors born after December 2004 whose parents’ names are not registered in the voters’ list would need to submit their own documents along with documents of both mother and father.
Dr Tiwari also revealed that more than 68 percent of the voter mapping exercise has already been completed in Meghalaya.
According to him, around 16.14 lakh voters out of the state’s total 23.44 lakh voters have already been mapped with the previous electoral rolls.
Clarifying concerns over document requirements, he stated that birth certificates are not the only accepted documents and voters can also submit other valid documents, including ration cards and other approved records.
He added that voters who are already mapped in the system are unlikely to face major issues regarding documentation.
