SHILLONG: Mawlai Mawroh once again came alive with energy and excitement as the Meghalaya State Boxing Championship 2025-26 officially kicked off, bringing together the state’s most promising young pugilists.
The four-day championship is being organised by the Meghalaya Boxing Association (MBA) with support from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.
This year’s tournament features competitions for both boys and girls in the junior (15-16 years) and youth (17-18 years) categories, with further divisions based on weight classes as per national and international standards. MBA Technical Director Larry Kharpran highlighted the structured format during his address at the opening ceremony.
A total of 105 young boxers representing eight districts and various established boxing clubs across the state are participating, showcasing the growing strength of boxing in Meghalaya.
Kharpran noted that the MBA, which was once limited mainly to the Khasi Hills region, has now expanded across the entire state. He expressed gratitude to the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs for its continued support in promoting the sport and making the championship possible.
The opening ceremony was graced by Assistant Director of Sports and Youth Affairs Paia B War Nongbri as the chief guest. Other notable attendees included Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) General Secretary Finely L Pariat, the Rangbah Shnong of Mawlai Mawroh, and officials from MSOA and various district boxing associations.
Speaking at the event, War Nongbri described boxing as one of the most promising sports for Meghalaya, especially with the upcoming National Games. He expressed confidence that under the guidance of the MBA, the state will produce athletes capable of competing at the highest level.
He also highlighted that the Directorate is actively supporting state associations in preparation for the National Games, which Meghalaya is set to host. Currently, 45 senior boxers from the state are undergoing intensive training for the mega event.
Encouraging the young athletes, War Nongbri urged them to aim for higher achievements while also maintaining focus on their education. He assured that the state government remains committed to further supporting the MBA, including bringing in expert coaches from outside if required.
The championship not only reflects the rising talent in Meghalaya boxing but also serves as a crucial platform for identifying future champions who could represent the state and the country in major competitions.
