SHILLONG, JAN 6: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has sought a detailed inquiry report into the death of two persons following an alleged dynamite explosion at Thangsko village in East Jaintia Hills district.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, MHRC secretary L Ch Marak said the Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident, which reportedly occurred at an illegal coal mining site in the area.
“The MHRC has taken suo motu cognizance pertaining to the unfortunate death of two people at Thangsko village in East Jaintia Hills district following an alleged dynamite blast in an EJH coal mine,” the statement said.
The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, directing that an effective inquiry be conducted and a detailed report submitted within one month.
So far, only one victim has been officially identified. Ashok Tamang succumbed to his injuries on January 1, 2026, while undergoing treatment at Shillong Civil Hospital.
Sources informed that Tamang was initially rushed to Sutnga Primary Health Centre on December 23, before being referred to Shillong due to the critical nature of his injuries.
The identity of the second victim has not yet been ascertained.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
