In a major arms recovery, police unearthed a cache of ammunition buried inside a bamboo grove during a joint search operation at Santogre village in South West Garo Hills district on Tuesday.
The operation was carried out under the jurisdiction of Salmanpara Police Station.
According to district police chief Vikash Varma, a total of 55 suspected live anti-aircraft ammunition were recovered during the search. The ammunition had reportedly been concealed underground in the bamboo grove.
“The police team unearthed a cache of ammunition during the search operation. A total of 55 suspected live anti-aircraft rounds were recovered,” Varma said in an official statement.
The seized ammunition was taken into custody at the spot in the presence of independent witnesses, strictly following all prescribed legal procedures.
Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the source of the ammunition and to identify those involved in the illegal activity.
Appealing to the public, the Superintendent of Police urged citizens to share any information related to individuals involved in unlawful activities.
“Information may be shared with the nearest police station. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, and a suitable reward will be provided,” Varma assured.
