SHILLONG : Deputy Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) vice president Sniawbhalang Dhar on Friday said the party will work hard to ensure the victory of DRL Nonglait in the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha byelection.
Speaking to reporters, Dhar said the NPP has officially announced Dr DRL Nonglait as its candidate and the party is fully committed to securing his win.
“We will work hard to make him win,” Dhar said while urging supporters and the public to back the candidate.
Describing Dr Nonglait as a “genuine” and “fresh face,” Dhar said the candidate carries “zero” personal anti-incumbency.
“He has clearly stated why he entered politics. Since he is a fresh face and new candidate, I think anti-incumbency personally to him maybe is zero,” he said.
However, Dhar admitted that if there were shortcomings within the party, the NPP would work to overcome them before the election.
On the possibility of more political leaders joining the NPP, Dhar said it was still too early for discussions, although some leaders had expressed interest after seeing the work done by the government.
Looking ahead to the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections, Dhar expressed confidence that the NPP would secure a solid majority.
“In 2028, I think we will be able to win a solid majority because lots of work has been happening on the ground,” he said.
Commenting on rival parties including the VPP, Congress and UDP, Dhar said the people of Meghalaya have witnessed the work carried out by the government over the last eight years and would decide accordingly during the elections.
