The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has not yet taken a decision on its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election, Deputy Chief Minister and senior party leader Sniawbhalang Dhar said on Thursday.
Responding to speculation that the party may field former Mawsynram MLA Himalaya Shangpliang for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya, Dhar clarified that no discussions have been finalized so far.
“We haven’t decided on that yet. Let the term of the incumbent Rajya Sabha MP finish first. We will sit as a party and collectively take a decision,” Dhar told reporters, stressing that the NPP follows a collective decision-making process.
When asked about the possibility of former cabinet minister James K. Sangma being considered for the post, Dhar dismissed the speculation.
“I told you we haven’t taken any decision yet. Maybe it is just a presumption from the public. That is not an issue,” he said.
Meanwhile, James K. Sangma has expressed his willingness to take on any responsibility assigned by the party.
“If the party entrusts me with any responsibility, I am willing to accept whatever assignment it deems fit,” Sangma stated.
The Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya is expected to fall vacant soon, as incumbent MP W.R. Kharlukhi has indicated that he will not be seeking re-election.
Former Lok Sabha MP Agatha Sangma has also emerged as a potential contender, stating that she is ready to support whichever candidate the party finalizes.
