SHILLONG : Meghalaya Police have arrested a man from Rajasthan for allegedly creating a fake social media account in the name of Vivekanand Singh Rathore, IPS, who is currently serving as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Western Range.
The accused, identified as Jahul Ali from Rajasthan, was arrested by police from Jaipur on May 23, 2026, following an investigation into an online impersonation and extortion case.
According to police sources, the accused allegedly created fake social media accounts using the name and identity of the senior IPS officer and demanded money from several people through online platforms.
Police said a number of individuals reportedly fell victim to the scam and were cheated by the accused through the fake account.
A case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.
Police officials said the investigation into the case is still underway and further details are awaited.
