SHILLONG : Ri-Bhoi Police on Tuesday night conducted a fresh traffic enforcement drive along National Highway-6 in the Byrnihat area, targeting violations such as drunk driving and riding without helmets.
The operation was carried out following reports that many commuters had started ignoring traffic rules and safety norms while driving on the busy highway stretch.
During the checking, police found several individuals riding without helmets and many others driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities imposed fines on some offenders, while others were let off with strict warnings and awareness on road safety, with officials indicating that stricter action may follow in future drives.
The special drive in Byrnihat was led by senior police officials including Bankerlang Marwein, along with Rubul Ali and Michael Marak, supported by other police personnel.
The drive also saw active participation from the RBYF Byrnihat Circle under the leadership of President Ricky Lapang and Vice President Frankie Ranee along with its members.
Police officials emphasized that such drives will continue to ensure stricter enforcement of traffic rules and to improve road safety in the region, especially along critical routes like NH-6.
