SHILLONG : The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) is set to launch a special enforcement drive, ‘Operation Free Flow’, to tackle increasing instances of haphazard parking, traffic congestion and obstruction of roads across the city.
The initiative was announced by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, through a press release issued on July 24.
According to the traffic police, the increasing number of vehicles parked improperly has been causing traffic congestion, obstructing carriageways and creating inconvenience for road users.
To implement the special drive effectively, a dedicated Shillong Traffic Enforcement Team (STET) has been constituted.
The STET will conduct intensive enforcement against vehicles found parked in No Parking zones or in a manner that obstructs the free flow of traffic.
The traffic police said the enforcement drive will be carried out strictly and impartially, with exceptions only for cases involving genuine emergencies or medical exigencies.
Operation Free Flow Aims to Improve Traffic Discipline
The Shillong Traffic Police said the objective of ‘Operation Free Flow’ is not merely to enforce traffic rules but also to promote responsible parking behaviour and improve overall traffic discipline in the city.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring safer and more efficient roads for all road users while reducing congestion caused by improper parking.
The STP has urged citizens to support the initiative by following traffic rules and encouraging others to do the same.
“Responsible parking and disciplined road use are essential for reducing congestion and making Shillong roads safer while ensuring Free Flow,” the traffic police said.
The special enforcement drive comes as Shillong continues to face traffic congestion and parking-related challenges, particularly in busy areas of the city.
The initiative is expected to see stricter action against vehicles parked in prohibited areas or in ways that obstruct the movement of traffic.
