UMIAM : One youth died while two others were injured after the scooter they were travelling on was allegedly hit by a truck that fled the scene following the accident at Umiam in Meghalaya during the early hours of July 27.
According to information gathered, the accident occurred on the highway at Umiam at around 12:35 am, where three youths were found lying on the road with injuries and bleeding. A scooter bearing registration number ML 05 AG 7001 was also found damaged at the accident site.
One of the youths, identified as Rahul Ch Sangma from South Garo Hills, succumbed to his injuries at the spot. The other two youths, whose identities have not yet been ascertained, sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to Civil Hospital, Shillong, for medical treatment.
Personnel from the Umiam Police Station reached the spot soon after the incident and began an investigation into the accident.
Based on preliminary evidence gathered at the scene, police suspect that the youths may have been hit by a truck, which allegedly fled the area immediately after the accident.
The body of Rahul Ch Sangma was shifted to the mortuary at Civil Hospital, Shillong, for post-mortem examination.
The police investigation is currently underway to establish the exact circumstances of the accident and identify the vehicle suspected to be involved in the incident.
